Subject: Fast switchers 1.2
A collection of tiny applications (not INITs, DAs, or FKeys) to
set the monitor depth/system volume of your Mac - without having
to bother opening the relevant control panel. Sound switchers
beep once at the new volume, and then quit. Colour switchers
switch to the desired colour depth by default, or gray scale if
the command key is held down. This release includes some Gray
Switchers for people with gray scale displays. All come with
ballon help, and are free.

Changes: PowerPC 601 info corrected, QuickRing info expanded, PowerPC rumors
added, thank you list shortened to those with direct sitations and moved,
added PCI info. Due to the rapid changes in computers I am interested in
contributions from Digest and other readers to flesh out, correct or point out
confusing parts of the report. Send comments and information to CompuServe:

This report compares the Mac and IBM machines CPUs, hardware {monitor support
and expansion}, operating systems {includes number crunching}, networking &
printing; it covers not only present hardware/software statistics and features
but also future possibilities.
Despite its condensed and generalized format it still provides some thought-
provoking reading on the relative merits, problems, and deficiencies of Macs
and IBM PCs. It also contains some FAQ answers about both machines.
Note: for proper reading off line this document should be in 9 point Monaco.

Subject: [ANS] Funny Font Prob (A)(Q)
I've had the same sort of problem with Monaco, the TrueType variety, in
3Com's 3+Mail (which tries to use Monaco 9 and 10) and also in other
apps which use Monaco. The small point size just looks LOUSY. Extra pixels
on screen, thick sides to some characters (seemingly at random), etc.
My only guess is to find an old 9 and 10 point copy of the font, of the
original variety (the non-TrueType) and put that in your system. If there's
a single-size font file available, the system will prefer that over the
multi-size TrueType.
Here's another question:
Has anyone had trouble with fonts in Word 4.x appearing shifted? It looks
like the characters don't line up right; the cursor selects things a few
pixels misplaced from where they should be. Like, you click on a space
next to a letter, and it selects the letter instead. Like the above problem,
it appeared when I installed Sys 7 and TT fonts and I wonder if it's a
problem with the font definition on my system. Answers would be
appreciated.

Subject: Adobe Type Reunion Slows Mac to a Crawl?
Hello Net:
Well, after four months of living with a soporific Mac IIvi (yes, I know,
my Sucker button's in the mail:-)) I decided to do some INIT surgery. The
problems I was experiencing were very sluggish menu redraws (5-10 seconds
for Word 4 to pop down its first menu), slow launches (40 seconds for Word
4), abysmal network performance (15 *minutes* to copy a 1MB file over
AppleTalk) and so on.
It took some time, as I have a whole boatload of extensions and control
panels. I eventually narrowed it down to Adobe Type Reunion. With it
installed, everything was draggy as hereinbefore detailed. Without it,
everything sped up to expected speeds (Word launches in about 10 seconds;
can produce first menu snappily; network performance, well, good
considering it's AppleTalk). The price? Giant font menus (six flavours of
Utopia, four Helvetica etc. etc.).
Anyone else seen this, come up with a fix or heard of a new version from
Adobe? Please e-mail me, as I'm not sure this is of general interest. I'll
summarize if it seems warranted.
Thanks

Anyone had problems getting Appletalk Remote Access to work on a Duo 230 with

even get to the dial tone). I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...
Also, when I try to turn "Answer calls" on in the Remote Access Setup control

tried reinstlling from the original disk (version 1.0) to no avail.

We have a similar problem except that retrospect crashes the mac being
backed up across the net (as a mounted volume) to crash.
It also crashed by trying to write over the end of our magneto optical
disks. We now have a DAT system and that seems easier.

If anyone wants any feedback on this program let me know - I hate it. I got
it to "double" the capacity of my SyQuest 44 meg disks, but after I
performed the formatting, I tried copying things directly from HD to
SyQuest and it held LESS THAN BEFORE! Originally, I could get about 42 megs
of stuff on my removable, and now I can only get about 38 megs. The <Get
Info> box tells the correct folder and file size, but it takes "twice" as
much room on the "doubled" cartridge. So much for cheap solutions - guess
now I'll have to justify the price for one of the 105's.

I am hooked up to buth, running NCSA TELNET, FETCH, amd MAC IP along with the

Three months ago I asked for information on Apple Installer scripts. Then I
received some replies and summarized them to info-mac. Here follows the
message I posted --hope this helps you.
--------------------------------------
Apple Installer summary
Thanks to brg@dgate.org (Brian Gaeke) and schultz@iastate.edu, who kindly
answered my question about writing scripts for the Apple Installer.
The reference is the 'Installer Scripting Guide' in the Developer's CD. The
complete package can also be found on ftp.apple.com, directory
/dts/mac/tools. The manual is really hard to read, but it's the only source
for the whole information.
There are also a few utilities that can make life easier when dealing with
scripts:
- ScriptGen (on AOL) that is supposed to write scripts for you.
- InstallerSpy (on info-mac/util) that let's you browse existing scripts
SmallerInstaller, by Bill Goodman, can be another option. It uses
CompactPro archives as its scripts: the layout of the archive determines
where the files will go. Of course, it can't deal with individual
resources, etc. SmallerInstaller can be found on GEnie. (I have no access
to GEnie; perhaps someone could upload it to sumex-aim.)

> this year with Apple's PostScript Level 2 printers, the Personal LaserWriter
> NTR and the LaserWriter Pro 600/630 . . . . .

>>> Adobe is calling its product PSPrinter 8.0, which will be licensed
directly
>>> to Adobe's PostScript OEMs for distribution with their products. End

>>> will be able to order the driver directly from Adobe for $24.95.
I interpreted the second comment to mean that I would find the driver at ftp.
apple.com, and so went asearching! I was unable to find it.
Would someone at Apple or at Adobe please let me (and possibly a few others),
first, when the driver will be available, and second, whether it will be

I woud love to use both Phtograde and FinePrint at 600dpi, and the
microfine toner of the LW Pro's should make this possible. It just ins't
something that Apple has upgraded yet. Hopefully they will get to it
soon.

Actually, the Pro's use the 72-pin SIMMS. They have two slots, each
of which can accept up to 16MB SIMMs thereby giving you 32MBs.

OzTeX 1.5 is now available at the following ftp sites:
rsphysse.anu.edu.au in pub/oztex/newoztex
ftp.tex.ac.uk in pub/archive/systems/mac/oztex
(It should also be at midway.uchicago.edu in about a week.)
There's a lot of changes in version 1.5; here are the most significant ones:
- OzTeX now has a "big" TeX (32 bit halfwords). The values of
mem_max, mem_top, pool_size and font_mem_size can all exceed 64K.
Other TeX parameter limits have also been increased.
- Multiple folders for TeX input files and TFM files are allowed.
- OzTeX supports all types of printers (not just PostScript printers).
- Non-resident PostScript font files can be downloaded on demand.
- OzTeX supports background printing and typesetting.
- New keyboard short cuts make it easier to proofread a DVI file.
(E.g., you can hit the space bar to scroll forwards through a document.)
- The "OzTeX User Guide" has been updated and expanded.
- OzTeX is now shareware.
The shareware fee is AUS$30 for an individual and AUS$150 for a group
(US$30 and US$150 for people or groups outside Australia.)
Both fees are one-time-only payments, covering this release and all
future versions. The group fee covers all members of a user group,
university, company, etc. All earlier versions remain freeware.
More info about the shareware fee is in OzTeX's Help menu.

Also, while I'm at it, a nudge in the right direction for information

happening? This has been going on for several months.
My guess is that you have a short circuit somewhere in your ADB power line
that has drained the battery. If you replace the internal battery I bet
your Mac will start fine for a while but eventually it will start
displaying the same symptoms. Keep track of how many days it operates from
the keyboard until it starts requiring you restart from the back.
If it does start displaying the same symptoms, either the short is on the
circuit board or in one of your ADB devices. You could replace the battery
with another and now try the same experiment except whenever you turn off
your Mac, unplug all the ADB devices. See how long it goes before the
problem develops again. If it lasts twice as long and the problem doesn't
reoccur, the short is in an ADB device. It it occurs in about the same
amout of time the short is on the Mac circuit board.
Good luck and of course, the usual disclaimers apply. You might trash your
Mac by opening it and following these instructions. I don't think so but I
have no way of knowing for sure. So proceed at your own risk.
Maybe others on Info-Mac have a better suggestion?

Subject: Stacker, an impression...
Folks,
I just received from Stac Electronics the "disk doubler" utility,
Stacker. I'd like to offer some impressions.
I was hoping that it would offer transparent operations. In many
ways, it does. Installation was easy and painless on my Mac LC, equipped
with a Quantum 105 lps drive and the Apple Conner 40 drive. I use
SilverLining as my hard drive driver. I run System 7.1. I Stacked the
Conner and my free space increased by 5 meg according the utility
FreeSpace but increased by about 40 meg according to everything else.
My Conner drive is kind of like a spill-over. It has lots of
stored files, most of my games, and my download folder. It is the one I
usually experiment with. Prior to Stacker's installation on that
mechanism, I did a time check and this is the result, using La Cie's
TimeDrive:
+ + + + + + + + + + +
Volume: Conner 40 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Size: 40552K
test size = 512K
(using a temporary contiguous file of size 512K)
Pass 1:
Latency = 8.25 ms (3636 RPM)
Ave. Seek = 18.66 ms, (access = 26.91 ms)
Max. Seek = 31.75 ms, (access = 40.00 ms)
Write transfer rate = 898 KBytes/Sec.
Read transfer rate = 1014 KBytes/Sec.
Simulated "Typical" rate = 205 KBytes/Sec.
+ + + + + + + + + + +
After Stacker's installation, here is the same mechanism's test:
+ + + + + + + + + + +
Volume: Conner 40 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Size: 80552K
test size = 512K
(using a temporary contiguous file of size 512K)
Pass 1:
Latency = 2.28 ms
[Rymal: weird, what happened to the RPM by the Latency???]
Ave. Seek = 57.66 ms, (access = 59.94 ms)
Max. Seek = 31.91 ms, (access = 34.19 ms)
Write transfer rate = 69 KBytes/Sec.
Read transfer rate = 327 KBytes/Sec.
Simulated "Typical" rate = 106 KBytes/Sec.
+ + + + + + + + + + +
Not to totally trust benchmarking software, I did some real
"world" tests. I transferred the entire folder of Spectre 2.0 to my
Quantum, which has not been Stacked. I had CopyDoubler from Fifth
Generation installed. It claimed that the Spectre folder was read in at
280k/sec from the unStacked Conner. (CopyDoubler didn't seem to gather
enough info to get this correct before it completed the read.) It wrote
the Spectre folder to the Quantum at 337k/sec. After being Stacked, the
Conner read the Spectre folder at 175k/sec, and wrote it to the Quantum at
337k/sec (expected, I think).
Going the other way.... the Spectre folder was read from the
Quantum at 430k/sec and wrote to the unStacked Conner at 290k/sec. After
the Conner was Stacked, the Spectre folder was written to the Stacked
Conner at 50k/sec.
Ok, numbers can exaggerate differences. Do the senses notice
the slowdown? Yes.
Personally, and I think I'm correct on this, I find AutoDoubler
faster overall and certainly more transparent. If one does not have a
large cache, AutoDoubler will take some time compressing an AutoDoubled
file that is being closed. But, for the most part, these files are really
huge and are not typical. So, the "recompression" will occur in RAM if
the cache is large enough, resulting in unnoticeable operation.
Therefore, there is no speed degradation, no performance loss with
AutoDoubler as long as the "cache" rule is observed.
Under Stacker the overall performance is slow, whether the files
are large or small. Stacker's manual (with its misspelled words, well...
I'm not too great, either!) mentioned setting the disk cache and gave some
values. I did that and could not tell any appreciable performance
difference.
So, for me, and since I was called an "ignorant bozo" a few weeks
back, I find as an amateur that Stacker's overall performance will slow
the drive down. AutoDoubler will not, as long as the cache limit is
observed.
Stacker's effect on my Conner is disappointing, mainly because of
the ballyhoo over its technology and the bragging rights of our IBM
neighbors who really praise the product. On the other hand, Norton's
Utilities was a standard for that platform and is of marginal quality for
the Mac in my bozo opinion.
So, unless I have missed something in the manual, be prepared for
a slow-down on your mechanism with Stacker. Don't remove AutoDoubler and
replace it with Stacker.

Regaring the questions concerning Times Two - the s/w driver that claims
to double your disk capacity. I too, received the ad and decided to order
it. For the special price of $50.00 I figured I wouldn't be out much money
if it didn't work as advertised.
I received the package yesterday, less than a week after ordering it, and
I installed it this morning on my PB160 with GO120hd. I had about 20Megs
left unused on the drive prior to installation. I did actually read the
manual - a rarity for me - and had no problems with the installation although
it took more like an hour than the implied "few minutes." I turned off
virus protection and rebooted with extensions off to eliminated the
potential parade of conflicts that march across the screen at bootup.
Upon completion, it indicated that I have a 240Meg drive - confirmed with
Norton Utilities and others. For all appearances, the s/w works as
advertised without a noticeable loss in read/write/access speed. Granted,
I have no long term experience with Times Two (nor any affiliation with
the company) but as of this moment I am very happy with it and can report
that it works for me. If it continues to function, it sure beats the
cost of adding new drives!

I am trying to uncompress some of the sound files on sumex-aim in a

the specific file I am trying to do. They both say that it is an
unknown compression type.
What I figure is going on is that they archives were generated with a
new version of Stuffit, and the compression type is not included in these
older UNIX based utilities.
Does anyone know of any updates to these utilites to include new
compression types? I guess that I am looking for a "Stuffit Expander"
for UNIX.
